The Hsinchu harbor (新竹漁港) was originally built in the 1980s for the conveniences of fishing.

However, due to the decreasing amount of fish load over the years, the old harbor was replaced by the new harbor buildings which are more tourism-focused.

Now it's famous with the name Nanliao Fishing Habor (南寮漁港) as one of the popular recreational areas in Hsinchu. 

Activities that can be done around the harbor area are cycling, kite flying and dining seafood.

Nanliao Fishing Hobor is also the starting point of 17 km Coastline Scenic Area (17公里海岸線風景區), where you can also taste fresh seafood, enjoy the view of the harbor and fly kites. 

 

Nanilao Fishing Harbor was also the heaven for Pokemon fans. If you are into Pokemon Go, Nanilao Fishing Harbor definitely is a hot spot you must visit. 

It's no longer a hot spot after Hinshu goverment reconstruct the place. You can't image how crowded and crazy here even at the mid night.

In recent years, Taiwan's recreational fisheries and marine tourism have become more prevalent and popular, so the city government has planned a recreational fishing and sports park for the area, allowing for development the fishing port area and a diversification of functions.

The government had spent $850 million constructing and renovating Naliao area.

Public facilities within the fishing port are well planned, whether it be the access road, or public utilities.

Now it has become the best family sports park in Hinshu. It is a great place for family, friends and furry child.

During the Dragon Boat Festival (端午節) in June, there may be groups that practice dragon boat racing. 

If you're lucky enough, you can even catch a dragon boat competition.

Watching dragon boat race is fun and fantastic.

17km Scenic Coastline path(17公里海岸線) 

In additiion to tasting seafood , enjoying kite flying and experiencing the nature's beauty of fishing harbor, visitors can also enjoy the scenery by cycling.

Following the 17km Scenic Coastline path, the best way to enjoy this area is by bicycle, which goes with the recent "Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability”trend.

Enjoy this journey with a few friends to appreciate the beauty of the coast. The scenery changes by seasons, from warm spring to early autumn.

 

There are plenty of bike shops offering bike rental from NT$200 up at the starting point, Nanliao Fishing Harbor.

The biking trails are well-maintained with limited shades so make sure you have proper sun block protection applied. 

 

Most people think that the total length of the biking trail is 17 km. It's in fact, consider the round trip is 34 km.

Although this may sound like a long distance, once you are on the road, you will surely set your mind on enjoying fantastic views of coastline, wetlands, mangroves and wind turbines. 

You can also rent an electric bicycle might make your journey a bit more pleasurable.

 

Xiangshan Wetland (香山濕地)

Hsinchu encompasses 17 kilometers of splendid blue coastline, and thousands of hectares of seashore, becoming northern Taiwan's largest coastal wetland area.

Xiangshan Wetland is located at Hsinchu City's Xiangshan District (香山區). It stretches for a total of 15 kilometers and covers an area of 1,600 hectares.

You can reach here along the bikeway of 17 km Coastline Scenic Area. It takes around 1.5 hours for one way trip. 

 

Xiangshan Wetland has a rich ecosystem. It teem with life: Taiwan monk crabs, soldier crabs, and fiddler crabs are readily found here. Hsinchu also boasts successful fishing ports.

It is a coastal wildlife protection and conservation zone in Hsinchu City, and its muddy intertidal zone is around 2 kilometers long.

Xiangshan (香山) has also the largest oyster farm in northern Taiwan. It is the northernmost boundary for oyster farming in Taiwan.

The organic matter that have accumlated there serve as resources for a large amount of shrimp, crabs, snails, and shellfish, and also attracts water birds to come for foraging.

Furthermore, this area is also an necessary stop for Siberian migratory birds. Ecology here is rich and thriving, and includes plants such as spotted mangroves, kandelias, mangroves, Japanese eelgrass, and more. 

The International Bird Association has marked this area as a habitat conservation of wild birds.

The vast expanse of the wetlands makes it a good place for windmill power. The shadows cast by the giant turbines against the view of the sea makes a beautiful scene during sunset.

International Kite Festival (國際風箏節)

Hsinchu City is famous for its winds, and is a favorite destination of old and young kite flyers alike.

Aside from biking, flying a kite is a famous activity in the coastal area.

With the wind beside the seabed, flying a kite in Nanliao will be so much fun like flying a kite when you were in your childhood.

There is an annual Kite Festival in the area.

Hinshu is set to host the 2019 International Kite Festival (國際風箏節) at its Nanliao Harbor starting on Aug. 24.

Around 100 domestic and international kite flyers from places including the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Singapore, and Macau, will descend on the city with their kites to compete.

 

There will also be stunt kite performances.

Kites of all shapes and forms, including tigers, panda, and deers flying in the sky, as if making the sky above a zoo.

The adorable kites fill the hearts of children and adults alike with joy.

This kite flying venue is really big, and it is considered to be the biggest and best place in Taiwan to fly kites.

That's why the oganizer estimates there will be over 100 kites in the sky at once.

 

In olden days, people used paper and bamboo to make kites. They made kites in the form of butterflies, dragonflies, and birds.

These were our traditional kites. This festival has been held for three straight years and attracted over 150,000 spectators.

This year's festival will be the first time that a luminous kite show be held.

Fish Scale Causeway (魚鱗天梯)

Besides the fish market, you can walk along the dike for a view of harbor, Taiwan Strait (台灣海峽) and shore. 

The rumor Nanliao Fishing Harbor does not have access to the beach may be mistaken by others.

Although lacking good beaches, the City Government design Fish Scale Causeway (魚鱗天梯) and the waterfront part with the man-made beach. 

Fish Scale Causeway (魚鱗天梯) has became the best photo spot for the impressive sunset.

There is now the artificial beach and waterfront park next to the Nanliao Tourist Information Center where children can play.

Food in Nanliao

After biking, you can have a cup of coffee or snack in Nanliao. 

There are many stylish coffee shops for your choosen. 198 is one of the coffee shops with Jazz style. 

It's a mobile coffee cart before and get famous in Nanliao. Please note it's cash only.

Needless to say, you must taste sea food as Hsinchu harbor (新竹漁港) is well-known for its fishing goods. 

The harbor is the center of seafood business. It houses the Hsinchu Fishermen's Association since 1991, which has since become an important place for local residencts to buy seafood.

The trading is housed in the Hsinchu Seafood Wholesale Center, a two-story building, in which the ground floor of fish market sells a great variety of fresh seafood with fair prices and on the second floor there are plenty restaurants sell seafood delicacies, such as fish soup, seafood stir fried etc.

Visit the Hsinchu City Fish Market here to buy fresh and seasonal seafood or taste the delicious dishes made-to-order from the catch of the day.

Alternately, you can ask the restaurant to cook the seafood that you just purchased at the ground floor and pay minimum for the service.

As the Hsinchu City Government has been working hard to establish an integrated transportation network in the Nanliao area, after the completion and opening of the "Rong Bin Extension" of the Provincial Highway 68 in mid 2017, the "Nanliao Boulevard" is also completed and opens to traffic.

Connecting the expressway, Provincial Highway 68, the road will head directly into the port area, and it helps reducing traffic congestion in the surrounding region.

It takes about 20 minutes by car from Hsinchu Train Station via 68 express.
